About
I’m Matt Ellis, a software engineer with a passion for DevOps and automation.
My story
I love computers and have a keen interest in technology, now, but that didn’t use to be the case.
I enjoyed maths and science at school but never really had an interest or much exposure to computers. After school I went to university to study Biomedicine with a plan to pursue further medical studies. During my bachelor’s degree I decided that I didn’t want to continue further study in the medical field. Post university I struggled with finding a job but ended up working for non-profit organisation as an Administration Assistant. During my time there I took over management of the CRM database and taught myself SQL to be able to generate custom reports. This lead me to consider a career change into IT.
I managed to secure an entry-level job in QA with an edu-tech company. After a couple of years I taught myself C# so that I could move into the automation team. I then changed companies and worked on further automation projects. Again this involved learning new langugages and tools such as Java, JavaScript, Github Actions and Playwright.
I then moved into the financial services domain, working for a large superannuation company in Australia. I worked on a small team that built, shipped and maintained solutions in the digital space. Again I picked up some new skills along the way such as AWS, IaC, Typescript, React and Python.
Current focus
My career in IT is proof that valuable skills matter. One of the most valuable skills I believe at the moment is Kubernetes. That is what I am currently focused on mastering. I am working on setting up my homelab with a GitOps workflow using Flux and plan to take (and pass) the CKA exam in 2026.
